Another day, another spectacular goal to light up the European Games Beach Soccer competition. On Friday it fell to Italy`s Emmanuele Zurlo to provide the acrobatics, getting on the end of a speculative pass from deep and conjuring up a sublime overhead kick from the most acute of angles right into the top corner of the hapless Hungarians` goal.
Collazo Sotomayor dedicated his gold medal to the people of Azerbaijan after a standing ovation greeted his victory in the light welterweight gold-medal fight against Italy`s Vincenzo Mangiacapre. "I devote this to the Azerbaijani people. I am very thankful for the support from the stands. Their rooting encouraged me in the ring," he said in an emotional post-fight interview.
"I didn`t think, I just did it. It was instinctive", said Italy`s fencing genius Massimiliano Murolo after his unconventional leap attack on Tiberiu Dolniceanu with the score tied at 44-apiece in the men`s team sabre final. To the delight of his teammates, those instincts brought them each a European Games gold medal, consigning Romania to silver.
Great Britain`s Luke Greenbank added the 200m backstroke gold to the 100m title he won earlier in the week, only this time he had the luxury of several metres between himself and the chasing pack at the final touch. That was in no small part because he had just broken the world junior record in the process, chalking up a time of 1:56.89.
He might be nearly two metres tall and weigh just shy of 100kg, but British boxer Joe Joyce sure know how to celebrate a win. His joyful backflip was even more impressive given that it came after a hard-earned win over Russia`s Gasan Gimbatov in the super-heavyweight final.
